The Pink Bathroom Project

This rather beautiful bathroom is located downstairs as part of my clients home extension which takes in a boot room, playroom and utility. The brief was to create a pretty yet functional bathroom which would be a joy to relax in but also be able to handle hosing off mud from children and pets after a long forest walk. The brief also included a bathtub and a freestanding vanity unit and it was decided that the reclaimed terracotta floor tiles from Bert and May that run throughout the new boot and utility rooms would continue through to the bathroom. At the beginning of the design process I take plenty of time to discover my clients needs in terms of room functionality and style preferences, it was clear from the outset that my client wanted the space to feel natural and not polished and that pink and clay colours would feature strongly in this room.

If you’ve read any of my other blog posts you may have seen the search for ‘The Perfect Pink Tile’, that particular search was for this bathroom. We wanted to find tiles that were matt, soft pink but not overly feminine and a contrasting tile with a clay tone which blended well with the wall colour. A boxed wall which houses the toilet cistern and plumbing was finished in Pink Vigo tiles by Bert and May. As well as looking striking, these encaustic tiles measure 20x20cm which was the ideal size to use along the shelf of the boxed wall, perfect for styling up with a stylish soap dispenser and potted plant.

My client was keen to have maximum tiling around the bath area and had a preference for smaller tiles rather than large format. The Osaka Shell Matt Porcelain tile from Mandarin Stone offered the perfect clay colour which contrasted nicely with the Pink Vigo tile and a lovely tactile finish which brings a subtle texture to the room.

A rather beautiful and well crafted semi-bespoke vanity unit from Harvey George was finished in Farrow and Ball’s Jitney and completed with unlacquered brass handles from Corston Architectural. The wall mounted taps, shower rose, handheld shower and heated towel rail were sourced from Bespoke Taps, a rather extravagant buy yet never regrettable, they feel and look study, beautifully crafted and the unlacquered finish offsets the soft pinks perfectly.

The sanitaryware was purchased from Duravit, walls finished in Farrow & Ball’s Setting Plaster and a bespoke shower screen with brass edging was made to complete the look.

The below is the completed bathroom!
